College’s money-saving strategy: Shut down alumni email

The school’s going to save big, but is it worth the complaints?

Michigan State University has announced plans to stop providing full-service email accounts to alumni who graduated more than two years ago. The cost-cutting measure will save about $600,000, while affecting some 117,000 former students.

In fact, MSU’s policy had always been to discontinue alumni accounts, but it had simply never been enforced. These accounts amounted to about 45% of all university email.

About 400 alumni have complained about the loss of their accounts, which will be shut down at the end of August, but the constant growth in number of alumni email addresses made the decision necessary.

The money saved will instead be used to upgrade services for current students.
