See how this program gets students to capitalize on their social media habits.
San Jose State University has partnered with IBM to pilot The Great Mind Challenge, a program that helps students use their social media skills in a business environment. The program has proved popular in India, with more than 100,000 students participating since 2004.
Over the course of the semester, 96 students from multiple fields, including information systems, biotech and business management, group into teams to assess the social networking and collaboration techniques of an IBM business partner. They then create a strategy to improve that company’s social media plan.
The company, Group Business Software, gave students access to Q&A sessions, webinars, phone calls and email conversations, as well as social business experts they could collaborate with.
Already applying several of the students’ recommendations (including better use of blogs, videos and information flow), phase two focuses on building prototypes to model what GBS should be doing, resulting in a social business plan to be presented at the end of the semester.
Is this a good way for students to show off their social network prowess? Share your thoughts in the comments section, and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter.
